A map of the specialist sensuality field developed by Sensual Institute, a branch of the Swedish Institute of Inner Technology: what sensuality is, what allows it to emerge, how it can be developed, and how it shows up in everyday life. The taxonomy deepens one domain within the parent Institute’s broader Human Capacities framework.
1. Definition. Sensuality is the foundational concept: the human capacity to receive, interpret and respond to life through the body and senses, with attention, meaning and choice.
2. Encyclopedia. The Sensual Encyclopedia expands that concept into a living knowledge field across sensation, embodiment, pleasure, desire, relationship, art, culture, ecology, ethics, history, practice and research.
3. Capacities. The Sensual Capacities framework maps the practical abilities that let sensuality become usable in everyday life: noticing, receiving, discerning, enjoying, choosing, expressing, regulating and sharing experience.
4. Research. The Institute’s research layer asks how sensuality can be studied, operationalised, tested and discussed with appropriate methodological and ethical care.
The Sensual Capacities framework currently organises development across nine connected families:
This is not a ladder and it is not a personality test. The entries and capacities form a network. A question about attention may lead to pleasure, desire, interoception, sensual discernment, consent, aesthetics or ecology. That cross-linking is intentional: sensual life is shaped by bodies, relationships, environments, culture and meaning at the same time.
The purpose of the taxonomy is therefore not to reduce sensuality to a checklist. It is to make a complex human field easier to explore, research, teach and use.
